This Dealer Select Murphy Lab ’58 is one of those guitars. Gibson somehow combined a gorgeous flame top, an outrageously light 7-pound chambered body, a chunky baseball bat neck, and Murphy Lab Light Aging into one package. It’s basically a unicorn wearing a leather jacket.

Every little ding, finish check, rubbed edge, and bit of character was painstakingly created at the Gibson Murphy Lab. The only thing this guitar has ever battled is a team of highly skilled relic artists armed with decades of experience.

A Les Paul that weighs only 7 pounds almost feels like someone accidentally handed you the empty display model. Then you plug it in and realize, “Oh… nope… that’s definitely a real Les Paul.”

And this isn’t just a lightweight R8…  It’s a Dealer Select with a legitimately beautiful flame maple top. Most ’58s wear fairly subtle figuring, but this one clearly didn’t get the memo. It has enough flame to make an R9 glance over with mild jealousy while still keeping that classic vintage vibe.

The chunky ’58 neck is everything you’d hope for. Big without feeling clumsy, incredibly comfortable, and exactly the sort of neck that makes skinny-neck enthusiasts secretly reconsider their life choices after about five minutes.

The Custombuckers deliver everything you want from a great Burst—fat, woody cleans, singing sustain, articulate mids, and that unmistakable growl that has been emptying bank accounts for over sixty years.
